The performing arts are a powerful medium for expression, storytelling, and societal change. Yet, for many neurodivergent students navigating the challenges of university, the barriers to thriving in this space remain high. As a charity committed to raising awareness and fostering inclusion for neurodivergent individuals in the performing arts, we believe this is a challenge the industry must meet head-on.
Why does this matter?
Neurodivergent students bring unique perspectives, creativity, and depth to the performing arts. Their lived experiences enrich storytelling and innovation, challenging norms and shaping a more inclusive industry. Yet, university life often presents significant hurdles for these students—whether it’s navigating inaccessible environments, rigid expectations that fail to accommodate diverse learning styles, or the social and emotional challenges of being misunderstood or unsupported.
It’s estimated that over 15% of students in the UK identify as neurodivergent, yet the lack of tailored support systems leaves many struggling to meet their potential. Universities and performing arts institutions must do more to create spaces where neurodivergent students can thrive—not just survive.
Our Role as a Charity
We recognise that systemic change begins with awareness, education, and advocacy. That’s why we’re:
– Amplifying voices: Elevating the experiences of neurodivergent creatives to inform better practices.
– Building inclusive pathways: Encouraging universities and arts institutions to provide flexible, individualized support systems.
– Championing allies: Working with neurodivergent students, educators, and professionals to further gain ND lived experience.
Delivering free resources and training to institutions.
Creating a benchmark for inclusion: Through our new ACE Pledge for theatre groups and performing arts organisations, we’re setting a standard for accessibility and inclusivity.
How You Can Help
For universities and educators: It’s time to reflect on how curricula, teaching practices, and support systems can become more inclusive of neurodivergent learning styles and needs. Offering clear accommodations, fostering open communication, and promoting flexible approaches are essential steps.
For the arts industry: Look beyond traditional definitions of talent. Neurodivergent creatives are redefining performance, breaking conventions, and pushing artistic boundaries. Supporting them isn’t just an ethical imperative—it’s a creative one.
For individuals: Be an ally. Listen. Learn. Celebrate diversity in every form it takes.
Our Vision
A world where neurodivergence in the performing arts isn’t a barrier but a celebrated strength. Together, we can make the arts a space where every creative voice is valued, and every student has the chance to shine.
If you’re passionate about breaking down barriers and fostering inclusion in the arts, we’d love to hear from you. Let’s work together to ensure neurodivergent students feel seen, supported, and empowered to create, innovate, and inspire.
We need your lived experience!
As part of this ongoing work, we will be asking for more lived experience from neurodivergent students in the performing arts sector. This valuable input will help shape future initiatives and ultimately bring about fairer access for all. Watch this space for details on how you can participate and contribute to this vital conversation.
